In spring 2018, I took a few Cuckoo Flowers (Cardamine pratensis) with Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) eggs attached to them home and continued breeding them. In the spring of the following year, the butterflies hatched from the chrysalises that had overwintered outdoors: first the males.

In the spring of the following year, I was surprised to find Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) eggs on these plants. This is one of the caterpillars that hatched from them.

I had taken a few Cuckoo Flowers (Cardamine pratensis) home from Venusberg, each with an Orange Tip (Anthocharis cardamines) egg. At home the caterpillars soon hatched and after a few weeks they pupated. The picture shows one of the chrysalis about 4 weeks after pupation.

On 07/07/2021 I had observed a female Southern Small White (Pieris mannii) laying eggs on a potted Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) in my garden. Two days later, the flower pot was moved to my caterpillar breeding box. About 2.5 weeks later, I discovered a caterpillar on the still abundantly leafy Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens). A further 1.5 weeks later, a total of 17 (!) firmly spun Southern Small White (Pieris mannii) chrysalises were found. The Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) only had about 10% of its original leaf growth left.

Egg of a Small White (Pieris rapae) in Bonn-Kessenich

There is always a pot of Garden Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) in the half-shade at the entrance to my house during the summer. I regularly find individual eggs of Small White (Pieris rapae) there, but also egg clutches of Large White (Pieris brassicae). Newly hatched caterpillars rarely survive the first few days, apparently they are food for other animals. Caterpillars that have moved into the breeding box are often parasitised, especially by Large White (Pieris brassicae).

I had researched the behaviour of the Purple Hairstreak (Favonius quercus) in the literature and read that the butterflies only descend from the treetops on hot days and then only in the mornings and evenings. I cycled to a section of the Bonn Kottenforst forest with lots of oak trees. I didn't have to wait long before the first Purple Hairstreak (Favonius quercus) was spotted along the path.

I only saw a Brown Hairstreak (Thecla betulae) in our garden in the Bonn city area twice in a period of 18 years. Because there were no food plants for the caterpillar in the garden or in the neighbourhood, I decided to plant a Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa). After this had reached a height of around 2.50 metres in 2023, I searched the branches for the conspicuous white eggs of the Brown Hairstreak's (Thecla betulae) the following winter. After a short search, I was surprised to find them! Two of the tiny eggs were found on the Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) at a height of about 1.60 metres. In 2025 I found two more eggs on the same branch as the year before.

Right at the edge of the path I saw an Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) "inspecting" the upper parts of several Nettle Family (Urticaceae). After a few minutes, the female butterfly had made up her mind and began to lay her eggs, which took about 10 minutes.

I had taken some caterpillars of Map (Araschnia levana) found on a Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) home for rearing. This was a fortunate circumstance for the caterpillars, as part of the Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) there was mown or mulched two days later (probably as part of path maintenance work by the forestry office).

This was the first time I had come across an Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) in Bonn. The beautiful meadow in Bonn on the right bank of the Rhine is often used by Oberkassel dog owners as a "dog litter tray". The butterfly of the rarer reddish variety (f. clytie) was delighted: it sucked on a dried piece of dog faeces for a long time. Occasionally it flew up and did a few laps. Sometimes with a stopover to sunbathe on a single large shrub.

Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) after hibernation in the Kottenforst

In February 2021, it was unusually warm in Bonn for a few days after the icy cold. To my surprise, I saw a very tattered Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) on a gravel path in the Kottenforst on 21 February. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera with me that day. So I set off again two days later and - lo and behold - I came across another hibernating Large Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis polychloros) about 200 metres further on. However, it was another species in much better condition. Now equipped with a camera, I managed to take this photo. I also saw a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) and some male Brimstones (Gonepteryx rhamni). There were no flowering plants yet.
